Funding Educational Dreams
Education was very important to Barbara and Leizor Kessel, so they created a scholarship fund to benefit Jewish students from Greater Hartford pursuing higher education. When they passed, the Kessels, who were both Holocaust survivors, left their condo, personal property and part of their estate to create the Leizor and Barbara Kessel Scholarship Fund. Established 20 years ago with about $850,000, the fund has helped dozens of students realize their dreams, granting out more than $575,000. Today, their fund is worth more than $1 million…and will continue to award scholarships in perpetuity. “I am honored and humbled that the scholarship comes from two Holocaust survivors, and I will always remember their generosity and appreciate their accomplishments as immigrants to the United States. My educational pursuits would not be possible without the generous support from the Jewish Community Foundation.” Kessel Scholarship recipient Joshua Chachques
