Our goal is to help you make a difference in the community as thoughtful grantmakers.  This list of selected funding requests includes a broad range of charitable projects across our community.  As you consider supporting organizations that assist people in need, establish connections to Jewish life, inspire learning and promote healthy communities, we hope you will think about funding the following.

13 – A Musical Production

Help support a student run musical production of a show based on a 13-year-old boy who faces the challenges of his parents’ divorce, moving to a new home, trying to make new friends and planning his bar mitzvah. Mandell JCC

 

A Life of the Land

Funding sought to create a traveling exhibit to accompany the Society’s newest publication on Connecticut’s Jewish farmers.  It will showcase photos, documents and memorabilia. Jewish Historical Society

 

A Reason to Remember

Support sought to host a traveling exhibit from the Hatikvah Holocaust Education Center in Springfield at the Mandell JCC. A Reason to Remember tells the story of five Jewish families who lived in a rural German village under Nazi rule.  Jewish Historical Society

Jewish Holiday Books

COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

 

Huskies for Israel

Funding sought to underwrite two student interns and program expenses for pro-Israel advocacy activities on campus.  The project is designed to bring together students of various ethnic and religious backgrounds. University of Connecticut Hillel

 

Challah-back!

Fully funded

Sponsor weekly challah baking and kosher snacks for communal Shabbat dinners and Shabbat dinners in individual apartments. University of Hartford Hillel

 

Tzedek “Community Justice” Program

Subsidies needed for student travel to New Orleans on an alternative spring break immersion experience to repair and rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katina.  University of Connecticut Hillel and University of Hartford Hillel

 

Hadag Nahash Concert $3,000

World-renowned Israeli hip-hop band Hadag Nahash, recently featured in Adam Sandler’s hit movie Don’t Mess with the Zohan, will perform a concert expected to attract hundreds of college and high school students. Trinity College Hillel

 

Campus Coordination

Planning

$3,000

A consultant will work with JCRC and four college Hillels to train students on how to respond to anti-Israel news articles, letters, speakers and professors and offer positive Israeli cultural and foreign policy programs. JFACT Fund

 

Development Internship$1,200

JFS will create an opportunity for a college student to assist with an email newsletter, social networking outreach and an on-line event calendar and gain insight into a career in Jewish communal service. Jewish Family Services

 

EDUCATION

  

Laminating Machine

$2,000

A new laminating machine is needed to preserve visual aids, signs, charts and children’s work. Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy

 

“Walkie-Talkie” Communication System

$800

Hand held Walkie-Talkie radios allow staff to be in instant contact with one another to insure the safety of the student body. Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy

 

Beyond the Smartboard

$1,200 ($700 each)     

The addition of document cameras to Smartboards enable teachers to display worksheets, maps, newspaper articles, art projects and even science experiments to the entire class in two – and three – dimensions. Solomon Schechter Day School

 

Write Away

A team of teachers will meet during the summer to revise the scope and sequence of the K-8 writing curricula so that it is aligned with current State of Connecticut English Language Arts Standards. Solomon Schechter Day School

 

The Bible Raps Project: Artist in Residence Program

An artist-in-residence program for religious school and day school students with rapper and educator Matt Bar will excite students to learn Jewish text by creating rap lyrics to Torah stories.  Commissions on Jewish Education & Leadership/ Federation

 

Creating Jewish History

$3,000

$3,900 funded

The purchase of technical equipment will help college students enrolled in a Jewish documentary film making course to create short Holocaust testimonials of Hartford area survivors for presentations in schools and other public forums. Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies

 

ELDERLY

  

Passover Preparations

Fully funded

 

Funds requested to help underwrite the costs associated with preparing for Passover, including purchasing Kosher for Passover food, kashering kitchens and paying visiting cantors.  Hebrew Home and Hospital

 

Videoing for Posterity

$500

 

Create lasting memories for residents and their families through the purchase of a DVD Handycam Camcorder to record productions of plays, poetry readings, sing-a-longs and more.  These activities are also fun and therapeutic. Federation Homes

 

Relaxin’ Radio

$3,000

Fully funded

 

Companion Radio provides residents and clients with four private radio stations designed to broadcast stimulating, participatory, meaningful and age-appropriate programming commercial free, 24 hours a day. Hebrew Home and Hospital

 

ISRAEL

  

Children’s Trauma Therapy

$3,000

$2,314 funded

 

The Hibuki (huggy) doll program seeks to ease Israeli pre-school children’s stress brought on by terrorism by giving therapeutic responsibilities of caring for a special stuffed animal, thus helping them to indirectly cope with their own fears and anxieties.  Ashalim - a project of the American Joint Distribution Committee

 

Military Preparation Project

$3,000

$500 funded

 

Physically disabled 11th and 12th graders train to endure the demands and rigors of army life and perform military service.  In Israel, army service is not only a means of defending the country, but a means of integrating and building Israeli society.  This project enables disabled teens to serve in all units of the army.  Etgarim

 

Israeli Young Emissary /Alumni Network $375

Develop a database of information about the impact of the Israeli Emissary Program through a survey of former host families and participants. Information would be used to develop volunteer opportunities and professional exchange programs.  Southern New England Consortium /Partnership 2000

 

SOCIAL JUSTICE

  

Hospitality Program

$2,000

The Volunteer Task Force plans to develop a marketing brochure and hold a recruitment and information fair to help members learn about how to get involved at the JCC and give back to our community.  Mandell Jewish Community Center

 

Child Nutrition Program

$3,000

Fully funded

Help fund a Child Nutrition Seder to bring attention to the issue of hunger and highlight the need for Congress to reauthorize The Child Nutrition Act with at least $1billion in new funding.  Jewish Community Relations Council

 

Welcome Video$3,000

As part of a rebranding initiative, the video will reintroduce Federation and its 30 local agencies to prospective donors.  Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford

 

SPECIAL POPULATIONS

  

This Old House

Fully funded

The Brookmoor Road group home is in serious need of durable living and dining room furniture.  Jewish Association of Community Living

 

Client Transportation

$3,000

Fully funded

Older and disabled clients often cannot travel by bus, or travel by bus and then walk from the nearby bus stop, to the JFS offices.  Funds are needed to pay for taxi services for needy and vulnerable clients.  Jewish Family Services
