The Jewish Community Foundation offers financial assistance to Jewish students for college and graduate school education, including tuition, fees, room and board.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be of the Jewish faith;
  • Be accepted or currently enrolled at an accredited institution of higher learning;
  • Be a current or former resident of Greater Hartford, Connecticut (or his/her parents may satisfy the residency requirement);
  • Be a citizen of the United States; and
  • Satisfy unique criteria of individual scholarship funds including, in most cases, financial need.

Application

If you meet the eligibility criteria, we encourage you to apply for one of our scholarships.  Recipients of past awards may apply for, but are not guaranteed, future financial assistance.  Complete only one application to apply for all of our scholarships.  Applications without the required information or attachments may be rejected.  To download PDF or Microsoft Word versions of the application, see the "Scholarships" navigation bar at upper right.

Selection Process

Our scholarship committee normally meets in May to review the applications.  Awards are based on the criteria described above, academic performance, extracurricular activities, and, in many cases, financial need and strong personal commitment to the Jewish community, as well as the student's essay. Awards are normally within the $1,000 to $2,500 range but may be as high as $5,000. Currently, one of our funds provides for renewable four-year scholarships. All scholarship awards are confidential and a recipient’s name would become known only with his or her express permission.

Deadline and Notification

Scholarship applications for the upcoming school year are due no later than April 15th.  Notification of awards or denial of scholarships is normally in June.

Obligations in Accepting a Scholarship

Recipients of Jewish Community Foundation scholarships, except for reasons of health or other emergency, are expected to complete the year of study for which the scholarship is awarded.  Failure to fulfill this commitment will require a refund of the amount expended on the student’s behalf.  We ask that recipients send acknowledgment letters to the donors who made the scholarship(s) possible.
