Jewish Community Foundation and Jewish Family Services join forces to “HELP” The calls for assistance keep coming in. An elderly woman who can’t pay for a prescription to treat her diabetes; a family of four whose head of household lost his job and is unable to pay the utility bill or rent. Across Greater Hartford, hundreds of people are struggling to get basic needs met—food, shelter and clothing—and handle ongoing financial obligations. In April the Foundation offered a 1:1 match to raise contributions to The Helping Fund. Jewish Family Services approached its board and loyal donors to raise $25,000 in gifts to meet the challenge. Foundation Friends Celebrate Giving Their Way 130 donors and community leaders attended the Jewish Community Foundation’s Spring Reception at Beth El Temple in West Hartford. Lisa Gann, Director of OneFamily Fund, an Israeli organization dedicated to providing emotional, financial and social support to victims of terror, spoke about the impact of the Foundation’s recent grant to its Big Brother/Big Sister program. One grant can impact many lives.

Women Gather for Tea Celebrating the Life of Lillian Wald Lillian D. Wald, a Jewish woman living at the turn of the 20th century who left a comfortable life to champion the rights of Russian immigrants, came to life at a tea for women sponsored by the Lillian Fund – a giving circle at the Jewish Community Foundation. Pat Kazakoff, a talented local actress with over 30 years of experience in theater and performance, performed as Lillian Wald and spoke to the audience about her life. Susan Campbell, of the Hartford Courant, talked to the group about the plight of women and children across the state, and the cycles of poverty, unemployment and domestic violence faced by many. Local Artists Help Women and Children in Need Paintings, sculpture, ceramic cups and photographs were designed by local artists for the Women’s Seder on March 2nd. Proceeds from the sale of the original art will benefit the Lillian Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation. The Lillian Fund is a giving circle to help women and children in need, in the Hartford area and in Israel. The Fund is named for Lillian D. Wald, a Jewish woman who left a privileged life to champion the rights of Eastern European immigrants living on New York’s Lower East Side at the turn of the century.

Jewish Community Foundation Grant Brings Kids to the Big Screen On Tuesday December 1st four busloads of children enrolled in the extracurricular arts program at the Charter Oak Cultural Center enjoyed a screening of The Princess and the Frog, Disney's first film featuring an African American animated princess. Transportation to the screening was provided by a grant from the Regina H. and Paul P. Mitnick Fund, one of more than one hundred donor advised funds at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford. With a donor advised fund, individuals and families have the privilege to recommend grants from their fund to the causes and organizations they care about while leaving the paperwork to the Foundation.

Jewish Community Foundation sponsors Estate and Business Planning Council luncheon 
More than 150 legal, accounting and financial planning professionals, members of the Estate and Business Council of Hartford, attended a luncheon cosponsored by the Jewish Community Foundation and Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. Edward J. Beckwith, counsel to affluent families across the country and national leader of Baker Hostetler’s Tax-Exempt practice, presented on “Practical Advanced Charitable Techniques for an Uncertain Economic Environment.” Attorney Beckwith noted the attractiveness in this economic climate of charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts in gift planning and the need for the professional advisor and charity to work together to meet donors’ objectives. Enthusiastic Crowd Attends Session on Investing Endowments in Today’s Financial Climate Michael Miller, Managing Director of Colonial Consulting, LLC presented an endowment investment briefing to a crowd of 40 Hartford area Jewish professionals and community leaders. Miller believes that in this climate, fear begins to drive investment decisions and people abandon sensible, proven strategies for successful investing. Community foundations, like the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford, can weather this storm due to their long-term investment strategies and consistent focus on broad asset diversification.

Lillian Fund Grant Helps Local Women and Children in Transition A grant from the Lillian Fund for Women and Children at the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford will help address challenges faced by women and children hit hardest by the economic crisis. Empowering Women in Philanthropic and Financial Planning 
Women are changing their behaviors as investors and philanthropists. Today women are better informed and able to ask questions of their advisors when making decisions about finance and charitable giving. On October 27, 2009, 14 women gathered at the Town and County Club for a luncheon and presentation by Nancy Fellinger, C.F.P. and Doreen Fundiller-Zweig, J.D., L.L.M. on investment and philanthropic values planning. Jewish Community Foundation Welcomes Four New Trustees
The Jewish Community Foundation recently elected four new trustees at its annual board meeting in September: Lisa Fishman, Blanche S. Goldenberg, Theodore N. Kaplan and Jessica P. Zachs. They joion 12 other members of the board. "The Foundation is privileged to have these talented and dedicated individuals join the Board. Each brings an exemplary record of volunteer leadership and board service and possesses experience in key areas that are crucial to the Jewish Community Foundation's mission," said Executive Director, Doreen Fundiller-Zweig. The Foundation Offers Unprecedented Emergency Operating Support to Local Agencies
At its meeting on June 18, the Jewish Community Foundation’s
Board of Trustees awarded $300,000 in emergency operating support to Hartford area nonprofits from its unrestricted community endowment funds to help the organizations with budget planning and developing strategies to support their fiscal and institutional health for the coming year. 140 donors and community leaders attended the Jewish Community Foundation’s Spring Reception at Beth El Temple in West Hartford on Wednesday, May 27. While Rachael Virgin, a Hartt School graduate, serenaded the group on violin, donors mingled and viewed an array of art work done by residents and members of local agencies. Leading Philanthropist Addresses Foundation on Revitalizing American Jewry On April 23, 2009, thirty people gathered to hear Scott A. Shay, a nationally recognized Jewish community leader, especially active in Jewish formal and informal education, and the author of "Getting Our Groove Back: How to Energize American Jewry" (Devorah, 2nd edition). HELPING FUND: More than $80,000 Available For Basic Needs The effects of the economic downturn that started in October continue to be felt today by families in Greater Hartford. Many people are struggling for the first time in their lives. Jewish Family Services, often the point of entry for these families, reports that requests for help in meeting basic human needs continue to rise dramatically. People are having difficulty paying utility and pharmaceutical bills, affording groceries, and finding employment. Click here to read the full article.
Foundation Offers Nonprofit Governance Series to Agencies and Synagogues Three sessions on topics ranging from Understanding the New 990 Form to Fiduciary Duty 101 were held through the Leave a Jewish Legacy Fundraising Academy. Attorney Leah Chatinover of Reid and Riege, P.C., Jack Horak, Esq., Chair of the Nonprofit Organization Practice Group at Reid and Riege, P.C., and Mary Kay Curtiss of Blum Shapiro, made presentations to representatives of local agencies and synagogues across the Greater Hartford Jewish community.
Experts Discuss Planned Giving in Difficult Economic Times
National fundraising experts Frank and Ellen Estes addressed a crowd of more than 35 Hartford area Jewish professionals and community leaders at a Fundraising Academy workshop entitled “Planned Giving in Difficult Times” on January 14.

The Foundation Begins a New Initiative Grants Program The Jewish Community Foundation has begun a New Initiative Grants program for new and innovative funding opportunities. Local agencies are encouraged to submit applications for cutting edge programs that address important needs in the Greater Hartford Jewish community. Leave a Jewish Legacy Initiative Promotes Bequest Giving The Jewish Community Foundation's Leave a Jewish Legacy initiative is mobilizing more than 20 local Jewish agencies and organizations to promote charitable giving through bequests. The Leave a Jewish Legacy program capitalizes on the historic transfer of wealth currently underway in this country by increasing awareness of the power of bequest giving, training staff in the estate gift process, and seeking out, educating and recognizing donors. The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford, its eligible beneficiary agencies, and area synagogues with permanent endowment funds at the Jewish Community Foundation are eligible to participate. “The time is right to tap into the power of bequest giving,” says Doreen Fundiller-Zweig, the Foundation's Executive Director. “Every one of us should consider leaving a charitable bequest and the imprint we want to leave for the Jewish community.” To learn more about the Leave a Jewish Legacy program, please call the Foundation at 860.523.7460 or click here. back to top
